VALENTINO SPRING 2025 BY ALESSANDRO MICHELE

After viewing the first images of the “new Valentino” under the helm of Alessandro Michele, many argued that the creative director took “his Gucci” to “his Valentino.” That isn’t the case, though. Michele takes his signature view on fashion and creative creation to the Italian house – it has nothing to do with copying one style to another. “Valentino was never a maximalist,” Michele explains. The “marvelous treasures of its archive” inspired him heavily for his first collection for Valentino. The initial idea was to let the collection hit stores without further notice, campaign, or lookbook. However, there was a change of plans right before they were about to do so. It didn’t feel right to hide the creations on which a dedicated team has worked hours from the more prominent public. Everyone who worked on the collection deserved the end product to be seen. “This is a beginning born out of love—it wants to be brought to light and be seen and shared,” Michele shared with Vogue.

He furthermore emphasized that Valentino has never been a minimalist. Even in his most “streamlined” times, he stuck to what he was great at – maximalist fashion. However, there wasn’t a particular period in Mister Valentino’s decade-spanning career. Michele’s collection forms a tribute to his entire oeuvre, with some substantial references to the seventies and eighties.

DITCHING GENDER NORMS

When he started at his previous job at Gucci, Michele only had a few weeks to develop his first collection. So, coming up with a complete Valentino Spring 2025 collection in a matter of months was just a challenge to be accepted. Just like his debut at Valentino, his debut at Gucci showed how to bend the gender spectrum, if not make it redundant. It’s more than just a trick: it’s Michele’s way of doing fashion – a way many designers, creatives, and other leading fashion figures should take notes of.
