Taboob: dismantling Instagram’s controversial algorithm regarding female boobs

Taboob has launched on Instagram and got blocked within a few days. Why? Because of Instagram’s controversial algorithm and rules concerning the female breast and nipple. Or, how they like to describe it: “an artful investigation into Instagram’s definition of a female breast”.

Taboob

Don’t get us wrong, we love Instagram. There’s only one thing we don’t get: its algorithm and rules concerning female boobs and nipples. Noortje Palmers didn’t get it either. Therefore, she started Taboob: an online platform and Instagram account which stands for “an artful investigation into Instagram’s definition of a female breast”.

Taboob sets out to discover when, according to Instagram, a breast is no longer a breast. On their acocunt, Taboob posts 75 (non-) breast pictures. By numbering them, they exactly know how many of them get blocked. Within a few hours the first account (@taboob) reached over 10.000 followers, which shows the topic is supported by many. Within a few days after launch, the account got blocker. However, Palmers didn’t give up and created the second account: @taboobofficial.

Free the nipple 2.0

Of course we remember the free the nipple movement of a few years ago. Why it is that men’s nipples are ok to be shown on the gram and women’s nipples and boobs aren’t? Of course we get that young children are on Instagram and of course we understand that there’s a difference between a sexually tinted picture and an artistic one. But where’s the line? And why doesn’t this hold for men as well? We’re confused. And happy as well, with a project as Taboob.

We sincerely hope they will free the nipple eventually. They got our blessings. Amen.
