IN CONVERSATION WITH MARLY ROOSEN

When asked about the inspiration behind the Samsøe Samsøe SS25 collection, Marly Roosen starts talking immediately: “We discussed the daily rush and how precious it is when we find those small moments to slow down and reflect. It’s like walking in the city at sunrise, enjoying the tranquility before the day begins.” This concept of finding peace amidst the hustle of daily life became the central theme, influencing the designs, color palette, and overall mood of the collection.

Roosen’s mornings are a blend of efficiency and serenity. “On weekdays, my mornings are quite quick; I respond to voice memos and texts from friends, shower, and eat. Living in Denmark, I love my bike rides to work,” she shares. Her weekends, however, are more relaxed. “I take slow morning walks since I live in the city center, close to my favorite spots like Apotek 57 and Frama. You’ll often find me enjoying my morning coffee in the beautiful King’s Garden.”

SAMSØE SAMSØE SPRING/SUMMER 2025

The mood board for the SS25 collection reflects on the influence of sustainability in Scandinavian design. “Sustainability is at the heart of design in Scandinavia—much more than just a trend; it’s a necessity. I see many great initiatives both within our company and from other brands,” she notes. The collection also draws from past trends like flats, capris, and tailored day dressing, showcasing the cyclical nature of fashion and the importance of designing long-lasting garments. If she had to pick a favorite from the collection, Rossen would opt for the Saharper jeans, a new silhouette introduced in this collection. “At the moment, it feels like I am living in my Saharper jeans. I like combining them with a hoodie for travel or wearing them over a bikini when I swim. The rounded legs with the mid-waist shape look great on various body types,” she says. Unlike previous seasons, accessories play a significant part in the collection. “We’ve expanded our range of sunglasses made from recycled acetate and introduced sneakers that fit every aesthetic, from sporty to elegant or casual. For the first time, we are using recycled leather for our bags, which is an important step towards our sustainability goals,” Roosen adds.

When asked about her ultimate highlight of the collection’s development phase, the womenswear designer doesn’t hesitate to answer: “My highlight, honestly, is working with the team. Everyone is so talented and passionate. It’s very special to have such a close bond with everyone, and we are collectively excited about what we do.”

TRUE TO ITS CORE

Creating a collection that remains true to Samsøe Samsøe’s core while staying relevant is no small feat. Roosen elaborates, “Samsøe Samsøe has a clear core of modern-day essentials. We reinvent key styles every season – like the Saagneta long skirt in linen, this time with a contemporary pinstripe. We also have an amazing Basics line and Blue Belief offering, which is Samsøe’s low-impact denim range. These serve as the perfect foundation for everyday dressing. Alongside these essentials, we design special statement pieces that let you choose between eye-catching styles, timeless classics, or a combination of both.”

In today’s fast-paced fashion world, micro-trends can rise and fall in the blink of an eye. Roosen acknowledges this: “The issue with micro trends is that they leave as fast as they arrive. With our commitment to responsibility, it’s important to us that we create collections that we know are here to stay, including pieces that we hope our customers will wear for years to come, not just for a single season.” However, Roosen also sees the value in micro-trends, noting that they offer insights into society and individual self-expression. “I love to see how people interpret style and make it their own. That’s what fashion is to me.”
