6 interesting and upcoming fashion photoghraphers to watch

It is time for a new generation of upcoming fashion photographers to step up. In times of the #MeeToo discussion reaching the fashion industry, new creative minds are more than welcome to replace the established order. On top of this, these new talents have a lot to offer: a refreshing and authentic look on fashion. Don’t expect glossy and glamorous photos, but a more documentary approach instead. We’ve listed 6 names to watch below – including some of their best work.

Upcoming fashion photographers to watch – the list

Upcoming fashion photographers – Jamie Hawkesworth

The British Jamie Hawkesworth blends documentary and fashion. His background differs from many other photographers, though. In 2007 he studied Forensic Sciences. When he photographed a reconstructed crime scene, he discovered that he liked to hold the camera. Within one year, he exchanged his current study for a bacchelor’s degree in photography. Since then, Hawkesworth has shot campaigns for Marni (the latest SS19 campaign, red.), Miu Miu, Loewe and Alexander McQueen, amongst others.

His authentic and documentary style is loved by many fashion houses and magazines. Hawkesworth brings a fresh sense of realness and rawness into the fashion industry, which are directly opposite to the long honored glamorous beauty ideals.

Upcoming fashion photographers – Olivia Bee

Olivia Bee is some kind of wonder kid – her photography skills were discovered when she was only 15 years old, when someone working at Converse stumbled upon her Flickr profile. Bee has always been interested in capturing the beauty of daily life and – how she likes to put it herself – “how the beauty of memories (real or imagined) touches us.” When Bee is on the job, she sticks to this philosophy. That’s what distinguishes her from others. She has developed a clear voice by staying true to herself and her personal interest. Therefore she captures only moments, things and people she likes, while loving what she does. With her work, she strives to display what she wants to see in the world, not the other way around. This has led to many jobs for big brands, such as adidas, Levi’s and REDValentino, as well as editorials for big titles as New York Times, Le Monde and Elle France. Olivia Bee is a woman to watch, if you ask us.

Upcoming fashion photographers – Giampaolo Sgura

“Never confuse fashion with style and sex with love” are words the Italian Giampaolo Sgura lives by. This is not the least statement to make as a fashion photographer. However, Sgura stays true to his words and views his photos as captures of certain moments that should pull you in. The images he creates speak to the imagination of both teenagers as well as grown-up women. What also sets Sgura apart from others, is that he can be quite overwhelming on set. He has to touch and feel the clothes and materials he works with, to be fully immersed in the moment. He creates these moments together with everyone on set, not just with a stylist or art director. And not with the least result: he shot editorials for Vogue Brasil, Germany and Japan, amongst others. Check out his photos below as see it for yourself.

Upcoming fashion photographers – Cass Bird

Cass Bird is one of a kind – according to her own words, she uses the camera not to capture pretty faces, but to “hang out with someone”. This has led to many photos on which she displays a certain connection between individuals and her camera. It is in line with how Bird experienced her big break through. She started capturing the lives of those who don’t want to obey the social norms. Another one of her first big projects was for a lesbian calendar she made with an old friend.

Cass Bird thinks it’s important to humanize the female forms, instead of objectifying them. This is what she strives for in her work. She puts the ideals of femininity and beauty to test and is widely recognized for doing so. Brands such as Ralph Lauren, Levi’s and Urban Outfitters are just a few that adorn on her list, as well as the British Vogue, New York Times and New York Magazine. She’s definitely one to watch.

Upcoming fashion photographers – Harley Weir

Harley Weir is responsible for several pictures that are so magnetic that they fully draw you in the moment. Weir graduated in 2010 from the St Martins College of Art and Design with a BA in Fine Art. Since then, she has worked for big fashion brands such as Céline, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney and Jacquemus. Not the least.

Weir is a very wanted photographer because of her ability to capture a sense of youth in her photographs. This breaks with the traditional ‘rules’ of fashion photography. Furthermore, Weir likes to focus on specific body parts, which creates flowing lines and evokes natural feelings when looking at her work.

When Harley Weir isn’t working for big magazines or fashion labels, she travels to conflict regions around the world to capture the landscapes and circumstances.

Upcoming fashion photographers – Carlijn Jacobs

Upcoming photographer Carlijn Jacobs has just graduated a couple of years ago and is a true rising star. In her work, she strives for a certain sense of timelessness and mystery, while she stays far away from perfection. She is inspired by the 80ies and 90ies, especially by the colors and settings you see on many photos from those decades.

Jacobs combines both analog and digital photography, which leads to a unique portfolio with a broad range of clients, such as Vogue, Glamcult and i-D. Jacobs always strives to put her personal mark on her work, whether it’s commercial or not. Besides this, she creates some free work every two months. No clients allowed. She thinks her best work originates at those moments and helps to get inspired for her more commercial jobs. And that didn’t stay unnoticed. Clients are standing in line and we can’t wait for Jacobs’ new work to be published.
