China will overtake the US as the world’s largest fashion market

One of the most important fashion industry trends of 2019 will be about China overtaking the US as the world’s largest fashion market. Not only shall much of it be developed in China, the Chinese consumers seem to have more power than ever and with this, their fashion market is growing rapidly as well. Further rise of pre-owned, refurbished and rental business models

Fashion will be less of a disposable product, since pre-owned and refurbished fashion will become bigger in 2019. Think of initiatives such as Designer Vintage, Vestiaire Collective and United Wardrobe, who have proven their success. We sincerely hope this trend will further develop in the coming years.

Brands are forced to go beyond traditional shared value

A younger group of consumers is aware of their environmental impact when continuing over-consumption, like many do today. In line with the success of rental and pre-owned fashion businesses, consumers more and more demand that the values of the brands they buy, are aligned with their own values. Consumers feel that they have a certain responsibility for their environmental and social impact.

The gap between discovery and purchase fades away

Since everything happens on mobile nowadays, [fashion] consumers no longer solely use their mobile devices for discovering the latest collections, but also instantly buy. Therefore, the gap between discovery and purchase phases fade away and in 2019, buying will be made easier. Maybe this will lead to an increase of see-now-buy-now shows. We’re excited about what 2019 has to offer…

Radical transparency will become bigger

We’ve already written about Everybody.World and Hund Hund earlier this year. These fashion brands make use of radical transparency by making clear where their materials come from and how a certain garment is priced. We expect this will be even bigger in 2019. Business of Fashion found in their yearly survey that more than 50% of the millenials conduct research before they buy a brand. Consumers are happy to support brands that are transparent about their entire value chain.
